UFC Fight Night Cincinnati: Brown vs Silva

By MMA Fights

UFC Fight Night Cincinnati LogoIt’s been a couple weeks since we saw Jon Jones dominate Glover Teixeira to once again defend his belt, but the UFC is back this weekend with a Fight Night card taking place in Cincinnati.  The main event features Matt Brown fighting Erick Silva in what is an interesting fight between a couple of ranked Welterweight fighters.  The co-main event is a middlewight fight between Costas Philippou and Lorenz Larkin.  It’s not really a great fight night card, but there are some interesting fights.

At UFC 172 I went 3 for 3 including taking Anthony Johnson over Phil Davis.  Another great set of picks for me and my wins this year just continue to pile up.  I will try to get another 2 W’s at this event.

2014 Record: 23-7 for +17.10 units.

Matt Brown vs Erick Silva

Matt Brown is on a 6 fight win streak and has knocked out his last 4 straight opponents.  Silva will definitely be his biggest test yet though as Silva is known as a great finisher.  He has a 4-3 record in the UFC and all of these wins have come by finishing the fight.  I don’t expect this fight to go the distance, but which of these guys will get the finish first.

Silva is a pretty big favourite in this fight and I’m not entirely sure why.  He has had more difficult opponents than Brown, but he’s lost to all of the big names he faced including getting knocked out by Dong-Hyun Kim last October and losing a decision to the now cut Jon Fitch a year before that.  His wins have come over no names in the UFC.  Matt Brown would definitely be his biggest win yet and when faced with big opponents he has not delivered.

I think Matt Brown could knockout Silva in this fight.  I think he is a better overall fighter than Kim who was able to get the KO over Silva.

Take Matt Brown +200 @ 5Dimes.

Costa Philippou vs Lorenz Larkin

Philippou is coming off of two losses in the UFC.  He didn’t win a fight in 2013 and has dropped to #12 in the UFC Middleweight rankings.  Larkin has also not performed well of late losing 2 of his last 3 fights.  This is a huge fight for both of these men if they hope to remain seen as contenders in the Middleweight division.  Each fighter lost to Francis Carmont by decision within a few months of each other.  Larkin then came back with a win over Camozzi followed by a loss to Brad Tavares in January of this year.  Philippou took on rising start Luke Rockhold and went out in the first round.

I have to say that Luke Rockhold is one of the top Middleweights in the division at this moment.  If you take away that loss and scratch out the Carmont loss that both fighters had then Philippou still has bigger wins on his resume.  He has beat Uriah Hall, Court McGee and Tim Boetsch in the past few years.  Larkin though has a win over Robbie Lawler in 2012, which many will look to as proof that Larkin should be able to take Philippou.

I really see this fight going either way, which is why I’m taking the 2/1 odds on Philippou in this one.

Take Costas Philippou +195 @ 5Dimes.
